Venutai Chavan formerly belonged to the More family of Phaltan, Satara district. From a very young age, values of patriotism were instilled in her that led to her decision of marrying a staunch patriot like Yashwantrao Chavan. They got married on 2nd June 1942. Yashwantrao Chavan participated in the Bharat Chodo Andolan for which he was arrested and sent to prison. Despite many setbacks and emotional crises, Venutai stood firmly with her husband and ran the household.
Yashwantrao Chavan was made a minister in 1952, after which he shifted to Mumbai along with Venu Tai Chavan. After four years he was sworn in as the First Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Venu Tai was aware of her husband's political commitments and thus took the responsibility of the entire household on her shoulders. She never interfered in her husband's political and legislative work. At the same time, Yashwantrao did not interfere with the household chores which were run by Venu Tai. Letters written by both of them to each other are extremely enriching and considered to be great pieces of Marathi literature.
